1. Global Youth Service Day
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest youth service and civic action event in the world and the only one that celebrates, expands, and sustains the capacity of all youth ages 5-25 and their communities to thrive by working together for the common good. Youth are powerful when they Lead ASAP through Awareness, Service, Advocacy, and Philanthropy projects. Key Coalition neighborhood has been a participating sponsor for six years.
2. Urban American Outdoor Annual Youth Fishing Derby
The Urban American Outdoor youth fishing derby is held in Spring Valley Park. Candice Price, former Key Coalition resident, founder, and CEO of Urban American Productions LLC along with her husband Wayne Hubbard, host of Urban American Outdoor created the derby. It’s no accident the event is held the Saturday before Father’s Day. Its purpose is to bring families together around outdoor activities in urban neighborhoods. As you talk with young competitors you realize they’re learning to fish and to spin fish tales. It’s a winning time for all but there can only be one competition winner. The winner is the child the catches the largest fish. And to that winner Wayne counts out $100 dollars.
3. Rock the Block
For the past 20 years, first-year students and transfer students at Rockhurst University have been introduced to the world of service through the Finucane Service Project. The event is named after Rev. William (Bill) Finucane, S.J., who served as the University’s director of campus ministry.
4. Family Fun Day
Family Fun Day is a time to welcome residents and neighbors to Spring Valley Park for games, food, and fun. The day includes entertainment on a stage provided by Parks and Recreations and school supplies for neighborhood youth. The 31st Brooklyn Xpress Mart owner Jay Jamaal, Lipari Sun Fresh owner John Lipari and The Brother from Another Mother organizations have helped make this event successful with their generous donations.
